Auckland Transport (AT) is responsible for keeping Auckland’s streets safe for everyone. Illegally parked vehicles can create danger for pedestrians and cyclists, as well as other motorists.
They can also block emergency vehicles from accessing people or properties in need.
What you can report to us
You can report vehicles that are illegally parked on local roads across Auckland. We cannot act on vehicles on state highways or private property.
For us to take action, such as issuing a ticket, a vehicle must be illegally parked as defined in the Land Transport Act 1998 and Road User Rule 2004. Sometimes a vehicle may look badly parked, but if it’s not breaking the law we cannot issue a ticket.
Before you make a report, check our examples of what we can ticket and what we cannot ticket.
We can ticket
Parking on footpath or cycle path
Parking on broken yellow lines
Overstaying a time limit
We cannot ticket
Vehicles that look old or untidy but are not illegal
Parking in residential parking zone with valid digital permit
Parking near a driveway or intersection but not within 1m
The 1m rule for driveways (and 6m rule for intersections) starts from the 'prolongation line', not from the kerb cut or grass berm.
The prolongation line is the extension of the straight line of the driveway or road.
How to report an illegally parked vehicle
You can report illegal parking online or by phone. We will prioritise cases based on the information you provide, not based on your reporting method. Phone cases are not actioned any faster than online.
If you want to report an abandoned vehicle, you can do that here.
We will keep your details private and secure. Your personal details will not be provided in the file sent to the parking officer.
Report online
You will need a MyAT account to report online. It takes less than 5 minutes to create a new account.
Before you report:
- check that it is something we can likely ticket
- gather details about the vehicle including the number plate and a clear photo of the illegal parking, if possible.
The details you provide help us to prioritise reports, do initial checks and act more quickly on illegal parking.
Report over the phone
Call our team on 09 355 3553 to report illegal parking. The phone line is open 24 hours a day.
Please do not call multiple times about the same incident. Once it is logged, we will take action as resource allows.
What happens after your report
After you report a vehicle, our team reviews the report and checks the vehicle in our system. This may include checking:
- vehicle registration and warrant of fitness
- digital parking permits
- relevant property boundaries.
We prioritise cases based on safety and seriousness, then send an officer to check the vehicle. Officers travel in AT-branded vehicles.
Our timing may vary
Response times vary based on location and where officers are already working. We focus most officers on proactive parking enforcement, with only a smaller number available to respond to reports.
Some areas, including islands and outer suburbs, may have longer wait times because of these constraints.
We do our best to attend quickly, but this is not always possible. Be assured that once we log your report, we will respond to it when we can.
There are several possible outcomes after an officer has visited the vehicle.
Although your evidence is important, we cannot issue a ticket based on your photos or report alone. An officer must visit the vehicle to collect official evidence.
Enforcement outcomes
- Infringement issued – this means we issued a fine, which may be posted or attached to the vehicle.
- Vehicle towed – if the vehicle is causing sufficient risk we may tow as well as ticket the vehicle.
Other outcomes
- Vehicle clear on arrival – this means the vehicle had left by the time we arrived.
- Vehicle parked legally – this means the vehicle was not breaking a law or not parked in a way that we could act on.
- Resolved without enforcement – this means the officer spoke with the driver and gave them a verbal warning, but no fine was issued.
- Vehicle on private property – property lines will not always be visible to the general public, we rely on council files to confirm property boundaries.
- Sign or marking fault – we cannot enforce illegal parking if our signs or markings are unreadable or missing. Let us know if a sign is damaged or missing.
If the outcome does not solve a long-term or bigger problem, there are other steps you can take.
Request broken yellow lines
If parking makes a narrow street or corner unsafe, you can make a request for broken yellow lines. Our team will review your request and let you know the outcome.
Talk to your local board
If the issue affects more than just you or your street, contact your local board. They may support a campaign about parking on grass berms or reminders about emergency access on narrow streets. They can also talk to us about requesting ongoing monitoring.
Find your local board on the Auckland Council website.
Report the issue to another authority
