As Auckland grows, so does the amount of traffic on our roads. To keep the city moving, we need to use the space we already have more efficiently – including how and where people park.

This is how we can make our roads more dynamic and responsive to changing needs throughout the day.

Parking spaces do not just help people stop and get things done. In some locations, they can also support movement when demand is highest.

For example, a parking space might become a bus lane during the morning rush hour. Later in the day, it could change into a T2 transit lane to help people get home more easily.

Dynamic lanes use overhead signs and on‑road lights (cat’s eyes) to change the direction of centre lanes at peak times, improving traffic flow when it’s needed most.

Currently, we have dynamic lanes operating in Auckland on Panmure Bridge, the Auckland Harbour Bridge, and Whangaparāoa Road.

By using our streets and parking spaces more dynamically, we can respond to changing needs, make better use of limited road space, and help keep Auckland moving.
