How to use pay by plate machines
To pay for parking you enter your number plate details and pay for the amount of time you want to park.
Pay by plate is paperless—so there is no ticket to display in your vehicle.
If the machine is faulty you will need to use another machine or AT Park to pay for parking.
- Enter your vehicle number plate details then press 'OK'
- If the number entered is wrong, select cancel and start again.
- Select how long you want to park—use the 'MORE' or 'LESS' buttons to choose the parking time you'd like, then press 'OK'.
- Complete payment—tap your contactless card on the reader.
- The machine will ask if you want an electronic receipt or eReceipt. If you select 'YES' it will display a 4-digit code and the URL my-receipt.com for you to go online to download your eReceipt.
- Once your transaction is complete, the machine returns to the main screen.
- Completed transactions cannot be reversed or credited at the pay by plate machine.
You must enter the correct number plate details of the vehicle that is parked—if you use the wrong details, an infringement notice may be issued.
Pay by plate machines cannot check that you have entered a valid plate number.
- Go to any pay by plate machine that is in the same price zone as where you're parked.
- Enter your number plate details.
- The remaining time will be shown on the machine screen.
When you use pay by plate:
- the machine only records the number plate details you enter
- parking officers can use licence plate recognition to check your vehicle has correctly paid for parking.
The system does not:
- cross-reference your plate details with any other vehicle registration databases
- capture any vehicle owner information.
Receipts
Pay by plate machines do not issue a paper ticket or receipt. You do not need to display a paper ticket in your vehicle.
If you do need a receipt, you can get an electronic receipt or eReceipt.
When you complete your payment using a pay by plate machine, the machine will display a message asking if you want an eReceipt:

AT is only able to process a request for a receipt when all the required information has been provided. Complete our pay by plate contact form and include:
- your vehicle number plate details
- the date of the transaction—bank statements often display the processing date, not the transaction date.
If you entered the wrong number plate details when you paid for your parking, you'll also need to supply:
- the machine number or address where the machine is
- how you paid for parking
- the last 4 numbers of the card you paid with—AT will never ask for your full card number
- how much the transaction was
- number plate details of any other vehicles you regularly drive—in case you entered the wrong vehicle details at the machine.
Requests are processed on a case-by-case basis. We cannot guarantee that the receipt will be provided.
When you use AT Park to pay for parking, you can find all your parking payments in your account's transaction history.

You can submit a refund request online. You will need to supply:
- the machine number or address where the machine is
- date and time of transaction
- amount of the transaction
- how you paid for parking—debit or credit card or AT Park app
- the last 4 numbers of the card you paid with—AT will never ask for your full card number
- if this was a machine fault or human error
- a description of the fault
If the issue is because you entered the wrong number plate you will need to provide both the incorrect and the correct plate details.
Timelines
Refund requests are assessed on a case-by-case basis.
We will review each request and respond within 10 working days. It may take longer than this to resolve.
It is not possible for the pay by plate machine to double charge a credit or debit card for one parking session.
Some customers may see a duplicate transaction appear on their bank statement. This will usually appear as ‘pending’ or ‘hold’ on your bank statement. These charges generally clear off your account within 2-3 business days.
If the duplicate transaction still appears after 7 days you can submit a refund request.
Operating times
Times vary from one paid parking area to another. Check the nearest pay by plate machine or use AT Park to find parking rates and times of operation.
There are also times when operating hours or when you can make payment may vary.
All machines are programmed in advance to accommodate times when there is no parking charge—for example on public holidays or outside of operating hours. This means there's no way that you can accidentally pay when parking is free.
The pay by plate machine screen will display the message: 'Operating hours above'. If you see this, read the tariffs to see when paid parking next starts.
Customers cannot park in a paid parking area if it becomes a clearway or bus lane. Pay by plate machines will also not accept payment when any restrictions are in place.
Before an area becomes active, parking machines enter 'wake-up mode'. During this time you can make payment before the next chargeable time begins.
The time you pay for will only start from when the paid parking area is active.
A roll-over period is when you pay for parking across 2 separate times that a paid parking area is active.
For example, you park in a paid parking area and plan to stay overnight. Your vehicle will still be in the car park when the new charge starts the next day. Select enough time to cover parking charges for the end of the day and for the start of the next day. You will only ever pay for any time that the paid parking area is active.
It is not available on all machines or at all times. For example, if the parking machine is in an area that will become a clearway or bus lane, roll over payment will not be possible.
Prior to the start of events, advisory signs are placed around the area of the event venue. For example, Spark Arena stating that the area is now a tow away zone due to an upcoming event.
Pay by plate machines in this area will not accept payments and will show 'Special Event'. They are pre-programmed to display event times and parking restrictions. If required, machines can also be switched off or covered over.
Customers should find alternative parking.

Conditions of use
If you are parked in an Auckland Transport paid parking zone or car park:
- by law, any vehicle parked in a paid parking area must have a valid parking session during the hours of operation

- failure to have a valid parking session may result in an infringement notice being issued
- you are required to correctly enter the vehicle licence plate number. If wrong plate number is entered an infringement notice may be issued
- after the maximum authorised time (if time limit applies) vehicle must be moved, or an infringement notice may be issued
- if the maximum time allowed, or the time of a valid parking session is exceeded, an infringement notice may be issued
- motorcyclists must have a valid parking session to be considered legally parked
- it is the customer’s responsibility to be aware and obey any restrictions for time limits, clearways and bus lanes that relate to the location of their parked vehicle
- payments made at parking machines are final, and Auckland Transport does not provide refunds for unused portions of parking sessions.
