Walking, driving, bus and cyclingOverview
We’re planning safety improvements at the intersection of Ngapipi Road and Ngaiwi Street in Ōrākei, which has been identified as a high‑risk location. Between 2020 and 2024, 6 crashes occurred here, including one serious injury.
Poor visibility at the crest of the road, drivers travelling too fast, and people not always giving way create risks for everyone using this intersection. These risks are especially high for motorcyclists, who are more vulnerable when other drivers misjudge gaps.
To make this area safer, we’re proposing changes from October 2026, including a new roundabout to slow speeds and a new pedestrian crossing on Ngapipi Road. The changes also include clearer road markings, traffic islands to guide movements, and the removal of two on‑street parking spaces on Ngaiwi Street.
The interim cycle lane will also be removed once the Ōrākei boardwalk is completed. These improvements will help reduce crashes and make the intersection safer and easier to navigate.
You can share your feedback about this project with us until Monday 2 March 2026.

Project background
There have been six crashes at this intersection in recent years. Poor visibility and drivers travelling too fast mean it’s not always easy for people to safely give way.
The changes include a new roundabout, a pedestrian crossing, clearer road markings, and traffic islands. They also involve removing two parking spaces on Ngaiwi Street and removing the interim cycle lane once the Ōrākei boardwalk is complete.
The Ōrākei Local Board supports this project, which is part of Auckland Transport’s wider Road Safety Programme.
