Registering a jetski
Registration of jetskis is mandatory. Auckland Transport (AT) manages registrations for Bay of Plenty, Auckland, Waikato and Northland areas.

If a 6-digit number starting with '1' is already displayed on the jetski, it is already registered and does not require a new registration. For more information, go to transferring jetski registration.
If a 6-digit number starting with '9' is already displayed on the jetski, it must be de-registered first with Waikato Regional Council and then re-registered with AT.
If you buy an unregistered jetski (personal watercraft), you'll need to register it.
Jetski registration overview
Jetski registration is a one-off registration, valid for the lifetime of the jetski. Registration helps provide a safe maritime environment for everyone. It also helps identify your jetski in case it is stolen.
Registering your jetski (personal watercraft) is mandatory under the Navigation Bylaw.
View the Navigation Bylaw and other harbour rules and regulations.
There is no requirement to register boats in New Zealand. A boat is not a personal watercraft.
Registering a jetski (5 steps)
Log in or sign up to MyAT
Jetski registrations can be managed through your MyAT account.
If you do not have a MyAT account, register for MyAT.
Provide details of your jetski
You'll need the:
- Hull Identification Number (HIN), located on the rear right-hand side of the jetski
- make
- model
- colour
- CC rating
- date of purchase
- year of manufacture.
You can also supply your trailer licence plate number. This helps make sure your jetski can be identified, for example, if it is stolen.
Get your stickers printed and applied
Stickers showing the official registration number must be clearly displayed above the waterline on both sides of your jetski in contrasting colour.
To print your stickers, you can:
- search jetski stickers or decals online to find print supplier options
- contact a jetski retailer as some retailers also offer sticker and decal print services.
For more information, go to jetski registration stickers.
Pay your registration fee
Pay securely with your credit or debit card. Check the fee schedule for registration costs.
Get confirmation
We'll email confirmation of your registration, including your registration number.
If you want to use your jetski before you get your registration stickers, make sure you carry proof of registration with you. This could be a copy of your confirmation email.
If the jetski is carried on board a foreign-flagged visiting vessel do not use this portal. Instead, contact the Harbourmaster's office for guidance.
De-registering your jetski
If your jetski is no longer in use, email Harbourmaster's office. Include your name, current registration number, and why you wish to de-register your jetski.
Use of unregistered jetski
Under the Auckland Council Navigation Bylaw, it is illegal to use an unregistered jetski in the Auckland region.
Enforcement officers can fine people $200 if they are in breach of the bylaw.
