Transferring jetski registration
When you sell or buy a jetski (personal watercraft), you'll need to get the registration transferred to the new owner.
If your jetski has a 6-digit number starting with ‘9’, it cannot be transferred.
You must de-register it with Waikato Regional Council and remove the old stickers.
The new owner must register with Auckland Transport (AT). A new 6-digit number starting with ‘1’ will be issued, and new stickers must be applied.
The transfer of jetski registration is a requirement under the Auckland Council Navigation Bylaw. The previous owner must start the transfer of registration process within 14 days of selling the jetski.
You can operate a jetski in Auckland if it’s registered with any council in New Zealand.
As a seller - request transfer of registration (3 steps)
Log in to your MyAT account
You can manage your jetski registrations through MyAT. If you do not have a MyAT account, register for MyAT.
Provide new owner's contact details
Find the registration details for the vessel you have sold and start the transfer process.
You'll need to provide us with the new owner's:
- name
- mobile number
- email address
- postal address.
In the event that you do not know the new owner or do not have their details, contact the Harbourmaster office.
Wait for new owner to accept the transfer
We’ll email the new owner so they can complete the jetski registration transfer. You’ll be notified once it’s done.
The registration stays in your name until the new owner accepts the transfer. Contact the new owner if there is a delay.
As a buyer - accept transfer of registration (3 steps)
Log in to your MyAT account
Using the unique link sent to your email address, log in to MyAT and you'll be able to access the jetski transfer request.
If you do not have a MyAT account, register for MyAT.
Confirm the details of your jetski
Confirm the jetski's:
- Hull Identification Number (HIN), located on the rear right-hand side of the jetski
- make
- model
- colour
- CC rating
- date of purchase
- year of manufacture
- trailer licence plate, this is optional.
Transfer is complete
We'll email you and the seller to confirm that the registration has been transferred. You can view your jetski registration details from your MyAT account.
