Project overview
Hobsonville Road is the key east-west connection between Westgate and Hobsonville Point. It provides resilience for State Highway 18 and is an important link between the ferry terminals and Westgate. Hobsonville Road will support public transport, walking and cycling. It will also support access for freight and the adjacent business areas.
The nature of the proposed works includes:
-
The upgrade of the section between State Highway 16 and Luckens Road to a 30 metre wide four-lane arterial, and a 24 metre wide two-lane arterial from Luckens Road to Brigham Creek Road, and widening to 30m between Brigham Creek Road and Memorial Park Lane. Walking and Cycling facilities will be provided on both sides along the entire length of the corridor.
-
The upgrade of several intersections, including the intersection with proposed Spedding Road and Brigham Creek Road (at SH18).
-
Stormwater ponds and culverts.
-
Batter slopes to enable widening of the corridor, and associated cut and fill activities.
-
Vegetation removal along the existing road corridor.
-
Other construction related activities required outside the permanent corridor including the re-grade of driveways, construction traffic manoeuvring and construction laydown areas.

Project status and anticipated construction timeframes
This project is currently in the appeal period. Submitters had 15 working days in which they could appeal to the Environment Court, against the whole or any part of the decision from AT. Appeals are under Section 174 of the Resource Management Act 1991.
During this process AT works together with appellants to come to a resolution. If both parties can't resolve the appeal independently, the Environment Court can appoint a mediator to facilitate the conversation. If a resolution can't be reached through court assisted mediation, then an Environment Court hearing will take place, and the Environment Court will issue a decision on the outcome.
There is currently no funding for detailed design or construction of this project. We anticipate the project will be delivered sometime within the next 15 years in line with Auckland Council’s land release strategy.
