East Coast Road, Whakatiwai

Road status: open, single lane

25 June 2025

Investigations are ongoing and work is expected to begin later in the year.  Construction is likely to take 3-4 months to complete.

The design process is underway for repairs needed on East Coast Road. Construction work is planned for 2025.

Manukau Heads Road, Awhitu Peninsula

Road status: closed, open to residents only

6 June 2025

This month the construction team have continued work on the general fill of the site, switching to the use of crushed concrete because of the wet ground conditions. The head of the slip has been trimmed back and is ready to be hydroseeded. One of the two large stormwater pipes that will protect the road from flooding in the future has been installed.

Heavy construction equipment works on the new road location.

The top of the slip has been trimmed back ready for hydroseeding.

9 May 2025

Work to repair a major road slip a few hundred metres from the Manukau Lighthouse is underway following a dawn blessing on 31 March 2025.  The 80m slip occurred during the early 2023 Auckland Anniversary Weekend storm. Repairs involve a new road and stormwater improvements.  We expect work to take 4 months. We also expect to close the road during the work. To date, we have:

  • built the erosion and sediment controls
  • stripped and stored the topsoil for the earthworks area for later rehabilitation after construction
  • installed the first (750mm) of the 2 new stormwater pipes to divert the water away from the slip
  • started the cut to fill excavation to build the road embankment
  • begun the trimming of the head of the slip to stabilise the top and ready it for hydroseeding.

Heavy construction vehicles work building a new road to access the lighthouse at the end of the road.

Building the new road next to the slip

10 April 2025

A dawn blessing was held on 31 March 2025 prior to the start of works, which includes building a new road and installing stormwater pipes.

Manukau Heads road

27 March 2025

Manukau Heads slip repair works will start from 31 March 2025. We expect repairs to take about 4 months.

Work hours will be 7am to 7pm, Monday to Saturday.

Traffic management

The current road closure, with resident access only and detours, will stay in place for the whole project. We will announce further temporary traffic management measures if needed. This may include:

  • lane closures
  • stop/go controls
  • speed restrictions.

10 December 2024

We've finished the design and a physical works tender has been released. We're now looking at tenders. We expect a successful contractor will be picked in January 2025.

20 November 2024

We have advertised a physical works tender to realign the road around the section that was destroyed. This work will also include drainage pipes to redirect water and remove the risk of flooding damaging the new road.

We plan to begin construction in January. This will take 4 months to complete.

9 July 2024

Design and project planning continues.

14 February 2024

The project team has completed geotechnical testing and a hydrology assessment. Their recommendation is to reestablish the road link by building a short road bypass at the slip site. Preparation of the detailed design and resource consent is under way. The project will include stormwater work to prevent storms from causing the same damage in the future.

20 July 2023

  • A safety fence to restrict access at the slip location has been installed.
  • ‘No access to lighthouse’ signage has been installed.
  • The local access gate has been upgraded, for use by residents only.

17 May 2023

On Manukau Heads Road, Awhitu Peninsula, a major slip occurred just a few hundred metres from the Manukau Lighthouse. The slip severed the road connection, and public access to the lighthouse and nearby properties is unavailable. The following aerial photo shows the extent of the slip, which extends approximately 80 metres downwards from the road.

An estimated 90,000 cubic metres of soil moved during the slip.

Initial assessment

The initial assessment indicates that stabilising the slip and restoring the road connection will not be a short process. A robust evaluation of repair options and site investigations are needed to ensure that the correct information informs decision-making before funds are committed to the design and construction of a permanent solution.

With restoration of the road connection being 12 to 18 months away, discussion around whether temporary public access should be restored in the interim is needed. This will also be a lengthy process because it involves land that AT does not own.

The most recent traffic data indicates that during the summer of 2020 (before the slip), about 240 vehicles travelled to the lighthouse per day.

Manukau Lighthouse

Road access to the lighthouse remains closed to the public.
