Half Moon Bay Ferry Terminal upgrades

About the project

We will start construction around spring 2024 and finish by late autumn 2025.

Our works will be carried out in different stages at the:

• ferry terminal
• Ara-Tai Road car park (adjacent to the SeaLink Terminal)
• along Ara-Tai Road.

We will confirm the timing and staging of these upgrades shortly.

Our contractors will work hard to complete the installation quickly. This will lessen disruption for our community, public transport users and local businesses.

Planned upgrades

Charger building works

We will build a new charger building in the Ara Tai Carpark to house the electrical equipment needed to connect cables to charge the ferries.

High-voltage and utility works

We are installing new ducting (tubes) that will run from the power unit outside Fresh Choice Supermarket carpark to the new charger building.

Vector will then upgrade the power unit and electrical utilities.

Low-voltage works

We will be:

• trenching and burying new cables from the charger building to the seawall
• installing new cable trays and supports under the wharf
• securing cables to the pontoon.

Improvements to the pontoon (passenger loading platform)

Changes will be made to the pontoon layout and a new charging dispenser will be installed to charge the electric ferries.

Why these upgrades are needed

We need a reliable and efficient charging system for our new electric ferries.

With our new cables and charging facility we can increase our fleet of electric ferries as Auckland’s population grows.

Using local electricity, our new fleet of hybrid electric ferries will reduce fuel consumption by 1.5 million litres and cut carbon dioxide emissions by 4,000 tonnes each year.

We can leave a cleaner, healthier and more efficient public transport system for our tamariki (children).

What to expect during construction

You may experience some disruption and delays to normal bus and ferry services. We will work with Fullers and our bus service operators to inform you of changes ahead of time.

Wherever possible, we will carry out works at night or on weekends.

Temporary carpark changes

We will temporarily remove carparks from the Half Moon Bay Carpark and along Ara-Tai Road. We will reopen them once construction and electrical upgrades are completed.

Temporary bus stop changes

We will set up temporary bus stops in the Ara-Tai Carpark. We will temporarily move the bus stop opposite the shopping centre car park further along Ara-Tai Road.
