Diversity, equity and inclusion strategy Diversity, equity and inclusion strategy

Our commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) enables us to represent and serve the people in Tāmaki Makaurau.

Our DEI vision is to offer fair and equal opportunities and celebrate differences. We have an inclusive, thriving and high performing culture. People feel safe, respected, valued and able to be their authentic selves. DEI serves the core pillars of our people strategy. It links to, and is reflected in our values:

  • Auahatanga - Better, Bolder, Together
  • Manaakitanga - We Care. Full Stop
  • Tiakitanga - Safe with Us
  • Whanaungatanga - We Connect.

Our diversity, equity and inclusion strategy

We are committed to continuous improvement. DEI is a shared responsibility across the organisation. Leaders play a crucial role in fostering an inclusive environment and prioritising diversity and equity.

Our refreshed strategy will continue to drive the DEI vision through 3 strategic priorities:

  • representing Tāmaki Makaurau
  • inclusive leadership and culture
  • staying accountable to our people and communities.

What does DEI mean?

Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) are 3 interconnected concepts that aim to create a fair and welcoming environment for everyone.

Diversity

Diversity is about the representation of different groups, and recognising and valuing differences. Those groups include ability, age, ethnicity, faith, gender, language, neurodiversity, race, sexual orientation, and socioeconomic status. This is particularly important in recruitment and positions of leadership.

Equity

Equity involves ensuring fair treatment, opportunities, and advancement for all people. It aims to remove barriers that prevent the full participation of some people, particularly those in underrepresented groups. Equity gives individuals what they need to succeed through organisational culture, practices and policies.

Inclusion

Inclusion is about creating environments in which any individual or group can feel welcomed, respected, supported, and valued. Non-dominant perspectives, values and preferences are considered and respected. It’s about fostering a sense of belonging. We want to make sure that diverse individuals can fully participate in all aspects of Auckland Transport.
