Latest update

Construction work on Browns Road continues

We have started precasting and installing the new stairs on Browns Road.

We are also upgrading the street lighting. During this time a traffic management plan will be in place from 9am to 3pm only.

Work has also begun on widening the Browns Road footpath. For your safety, cross at the pedestrian crossings and walk on the footpath across the other side of Browns Road.

Access to Homai Station is from the level crossings only. The old Browns Road stairs are closed.

Please only cross the railway at the pedestrian crossings. Keep to the path and always stop, look and listen for trains.

Browns Road stairs will remain closed until a new accessible ramp is built in the same place. The ramp will open in early 2025.

Construction work on Mcvilly Road

To improve access on Mcvilly Road, we may trim some trees in the next few weeks. We have notified residents directly affected by this.

We will upgrade and widen about 200m of footpath to 1.8 metres on the BLENNZ side of Mcvilly Road. We will put in place traffic management and temporary footpath detours during this time.

From 18 November to early December, please use the Dalgety Drive park and ride for drop offs and parking.

Changes around Homai Station

The stairs from Browns Road to Homai Station platform closed on 25 October. We are removing the stairs and replacing them with a new accessible ramp. We will install it over the Christmas period.

You can only access Homai station from the pedestrian level crossings.

Please keep to the path and always stop, look and listen for trains. Temporary fencing is now in place around the construction area. The fences are on the grass between the Dalgety Drive park and ride, and Homai Station.

We will install the new ramp in 2 parts. We built piles for the ramp over the Labour Day weekend. We will install the ramp over the Christmas period. During that period (27 December to early 2025), the whole rail network will be closed for annual maintenance. Buses will replace trains. For more information on timetables, please visit our train line status webpage.

For your safety we have:

  • placed barriers around the area to keep everyone safe
  • temporarily closed some footpaths in Dalgety Drive park and ride around the bus stop
  • built temporary accessible footpaths.

Contractors have set up their site in Dalgety Drive park and ride. In the next few weeks, you will see our contractors set up their proper site offices.

We will begin work on the streetlight upgrades on Browns Road. We anticipate this work to take about 4 weeks. During this time, a traffic management plan will be in place from 9am to 3pm only.

For your safety:

  • cross at the pedestrian crossings
  • walk on the footpath across the other side of Browns Rd.

We thank you for your patience during this time.

Homai Station 3D model of upcoming improvements

Limiting disruption

You will still be able to catch the train to and from Homai Station. Services will run as normal.

We’ve planned for the most disruptive work to take place while Auckland’s rail network is closed for maintenance.

From 27 December 2024 to early 2025, the station will be closed. Buses will replace trains.

Timeline of work

Early October

Our contractor set up on site in early October and will finish work in early 2025.

This work is weather dependent – timings may shift. We’ll update this page to ensure that you know about any changes.

From 27 December 2024

The 2 pedestrian level crossings will close permanently.

The whole rail network will be closed for annual maintenance from 27 December to 18 January. Buses will replace trains. For more information, including timetables, please visit our train line status webpage.

Early 2025

The new ramp from Browns Road will open.

Why we’re closing the Homai Station level crossings

Auckland Transport is working with KiwiRail and NZ Transport Agency. We want to improve our rail system for passengers, freight and inter-regional services.

We’re upgrading stations, adding more rail tracks, improving safety and opening the City Rail Link (CRL).

This will enable:

  • faster travel times
  • more train services
  • fewer transfers between services
  • improved safety along our rail network.

Every year, people are hurt and even killed at level crossings through accidents and unsafe behaviour. When CRL opens, it will double Auckland’s rail capacity, meaning more trains, more often. There will be an unacceptable increase in the risk to safety at level crossings. Closing Homai’s crossing addresses a safety risk and gives us an opportunity to make the station more accessible. It will also allow us to install other improvements requested by the community.
