Extreme weather events in Tāmaki Makaurau / Auckland caused damage to roads in 2023.
Over the last 18 months, we’ve made significant progress on repairing storm-damaged roads in the Central, Aotea and Gulf Islands area of Auckland.
Reported sites and slip repairs in Central, Aotea and Gulf Islands as of 31 January 2025:
- Total number of sites: 41 (14 major, 27 minor)
- Currently under construction: 1
- Completed sites: 28 (68%).
We have completed:
- 9 out of 14 major sites (64%)
- 19 out of 27 minor sites (70%).
One major slip is under construction – Aotea Road, Great Barrier Island.
The reported number of sites requiring minor or major repairs will change slightly over time as the design and investigation of each slip site develops.

13 February 2025
Slip repair work on Bassett Road got underway on 28 October 2024 and was completed at the end of January 2025. AT and its contractor would like to thank the community in this area for their patience while these extensive repairs were undertaken.

18 December 2024
Unexpected ground water in the work area has slowed progress.
The road will be opened to two lanes during the holiday break. Only shoulder closures will be in place. Work will start again from 6 January 2025, with single lane traffic management operating again.
8 November 2024
Slip repair work on Bassett Road got underway on 28 October 2024. We have cleared vegetation. The road is operating as a single lane.
1 August 2024
Design work to repair an underslip near 160 Bassett Road is currently under way.
Road status: open
7 March 2025
Our monitoring found that the ground is still moving. This means further non-urgent repairs to the road are needed. We're currently confirming the repair plans in this location.
June 2024
A monitoring device called an inclinometer has been installed on this slip. It takes fortnightly measurements to see if any movement is detected in the slip.
Monitoring will continue throughout winter.
