During March 2025 we'll be mapping the locations of utilities within the footpath and roadway along:

  • Lower Hobson Street
  • Customs Street West
  • eastern side of Sturdee Street
  • Fanshawe Street.

When this is happening

Mid to late-March 2025.

How we'll do this

We'll be using Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR). GPR uses radio waves to locate underground utilities, and this mapping will guide future works.

Disruptions caused by the investigation

GPR is not noisy, does not need road closures and will be done at night to minimise any disruptions.

Access to all buildings, residences and businesses will be maintained at all times.

Why we're doing this

Precinct Properties and Eke Panuku Development have agreed to develop the Downtown Car Park into a bold, world-class, mixed-use precinct.

This development is going through the statutory approvals process. Construction is not expected to start until 2026 at the earliest. The car park will run normally until then.

Next steps

Following GPR we will use the information to identify where additional utility investigations may be required.

We anticipate starting the next stage of the site investigations in July 2025. We'll provide more information once this is confirmed.
