Downtown utility investigations
Find out about the work we're doing to map utilities and ground conditions.
On this page
From mid-November to early December 2025, we’re working within the road and footpath on:
- Customs Street West
- Fanshawe Street.
What to expect
We’ll dig 6 trenches across the road and footpath on Customs Street West and Fanshawe Street.
We’ll dig 2 boreholes on Customs Street West.
We’ll also use CCTV to see the condition of manholes in the area.
We’ll work at night to lessen daytime disruption in a busy part of downtown. At the end of each night shift we’ll open the road by taking away cones and barriers.
During work hours, roads within the project area will stay open but we may close some lanes. Footpaths and pedestrian crossings will stay open.
We’ll dig trenches using high pressure air. This protects underground services from damage. Once we have finished, we’ll put work areas back how they were before investigation.
We’ll do our best to start and finish on time, but weather conditions may affect progress.
Why we're doing this work
In April this year, we used ground penetrating radar to map the general location of underground utilities in the area.
We now need to map the exact location of underground utilities and confirm ground conditions.
Transforming downtown Auckland
We’re upgrading public transport as part of the City Centre Bus Plan, to help people get into and around our city centre. This investigatory work supports changes that improve city centre bus services and enhance the downtown area.
Downtown Auckland is being reimagined and regenerated as a vibrant place for people. Plans are underway to redevelop the Downtown car park and surrounding area into a bold, world-class mixed-use precinct. The precinct will include premium commercial, retail and hospitality offerings. It will draw thousands of workers and visitors to the area every day.

Next steps
Auckland Transport will use the investigation results to help develop the street design for this area.
