Who is eligible

Full-time students at Auckland tertiary institutions can get a 40% discount on most buses, trains and ferries.

Who is not eligible

You cannot get the concession if you:

  • do not have an approved student ID card
  • are a part-time tertiary student
  • go to a tertiary institution outside the Auckland region
  • go to a tertiary institution that is not registered with Auckland Transport.

Ways to apply

You can apply online using your student portal or with a tertiary ID sticker. If you need help applying, you can apply in person.
Apply online with your student portal

You can apply online using your student portal if you are a student of:

  • University of Auckland (UoA)
  • Auckland University of Technology (AUT)
  • Massey University. 

If you go to another tertiary institute, you need to apply with a tertiary ID sticker.
  • A MyAT account.
  • A registered AT HOP card.
  • Log-in details for your UoA, AUT or Massey University account.
How to apply with your student portal
1. Go to the application form

Go to 'Apply for a concession' in MyAT.

You will be asked to log in.

2. Fill out the form

The form has 4 steps.

  1. Select the AT HOP card you will keep the concession on. You will have the option to switch between profiles to find the right card.
  2. Under 'Select a discount', choose ‘Tertiary (40% off)'.
  3. Tell us which institution you are enrolled at. You will need to log into your student portal to confirm your enrolment.
  4. You will find out if we were able to confirm your enrolment.
3. Wait for confirmation

We’ll email you to let you know we’ve received your application, and again when your concession is loaded. This can take 1 to 3 working days. If you use your AT HOP card in the meantime, adult fares will apply.

You can use the concession one hour after we email you.

4. Tag on to activate your concession

Tap your AT HOP card on a card reader or electronic gate at a station or on a bus, train or ferry.

If you do not tag on within 60 days, your concession will expire. Your card will go back to adult fares. If this happens, contact us and we can reactivate your concession.
Apply online with a tertiary ID sticker

You’ll need a sticker if you:

  • go to a tertiary institution other than University of Auckland, AUT or Massey University
  • use an AT HOP card that someone else manages (for example, your AT HOP profile is managed by a parent).

You can get stickers from your student hub on campus.

How to apply with a tertiary ID sticker
1. Go to the application form

Go to 'Apply for a concession' in MyAT.

You will be asked to log in.

2. Fill out the form
  1. Select the AT HOP card you will keep the concession on. You will have the option to switch between profiles to find the right card.
  2. Under 'Select a discount', choose ‘Tertiary (40% off)'.
  3. Tell us which institution you are enrolled at.
  4. Enter your sticker and student ID details to confirm your enrolment.
  5. Select ‘Send application’.
3. Go to a customer service centre

You need to go to a customer service centre (CSC) to verify your details. You will need to bring your student ID card and tertiary ID sticker.

The CSC staff will load the concession onto your AT HOP card.

4. Tag on to activate your concession

Tap your AT HOP card on a card reader or electronic gate at a station or on a bus, train or ferry.

If you do not tag on within 60 days, your concession will expire. Your card will go back to adult fares. If this happens, contact us and we can reactivate your concession.
Apply in person at a customer service centre
  • A MyAT account.
  • Your student ID.
How to apply at a customer service centre

To apply in person, go to one of our customer service centres (CSC). You can buy an AT HOP card at the CSC or bring one with you.

You’ll need to apply in person if you:

  • use an AT HOP card that someone else manages
  • are having problems applying online.

Bring your student ID card and your AT tertiary ID sticker (if needed).

When will your concession expire
UoA, AUT and Massey online applications

Your concession will expire after 3 years if:

  • you are a student at University of Auckland, AUT or Massey University
  • you applied online.

It will expire earlier if you are no longer eligible — for example, if you are no longer studying.
Other tertiary institutions and in-person applications

If you are a student at another tertiary institute or applied for your concession in person, it will expire at the earliest of either:

  • 31 March the following year
  • when your tertiary ID sticker expires
  • when your student ID card expires.

If you’re still eligible when your concession expires, you can contact us to renew it or reapply online.

If you’re no longer eligible for the tertiary student concession, find out what other concession you can get.

Travelling with the concession

The concession is loaded on a registered AT HOP card. You will need to tag on and off with that HOP card when you travel to get discounted fares. If you use cash or contactless, you will pay the full adult fare.

You cannot use the tertiary concession for:

  • Rakino Island or Waiheke Island ferries
  • buses, trains and ferries to and from other regions.

Carry your tertiary student ID with you

While travelling on the network, Transport Officers may ask for proof of ID.

Lost, stolen or damaged cards

Your concession is attached to your AT HOP card. This means if you lose your card and need a replacement, you need to transfer the concession onto your new card. You can also transfer any remaining balance from the old card onto the new.

Some people can get more than one concession

You can only keep one concession on each AT HOP card. If you get another concession, you will need to put it on another card.

You can only use one concession on each journey.

What is a tertiary institution

Tertiary institutions can be:

  • universities
  • polytechnics
  • institutes of technology
  • wānanga
  • private training establishments.
