Overview

The Homai Station level crossing removal project is complete.

The new access ramp to Homai Station was opened in January 2025. The ramp is now the only way to access the station.

Why we closed the Homai Station level crossings

Auckland Transport is working with KiwiRail and NZ Transport Agency. We want to improve our rail system for passengers, freight and inter-regional services.

We’re upgrading stations, adding more rail tracks, improving safety and opening the City Rail Link (CRL).

This will enable:

  • faster travel times
  • more train services
  • fewer transfers between services
  • improved safety along our rail network.

Every year, people are hurt and even killed at level crossings through accidents and unsafe behaviour. When CRL opens, it will double Auckland’s rail capacity, meaning more trains, more often. There will be an unacceptable increase in the risk to safety at level crossings.

Closing Homai’s crossings addresses a safety risk and gives us an opportunity to make the station more accessible. It will also allow us to install other improvements requested by the community.

Project benefits

Safer journeys for everyone

Level crossings increase safety risk and make travel times longer as there's more trains. If we don’t remove or replace them people may take more risks as barrier arms are down more often.

Supports more frequent trains

Removing level crossings helps futureproof the rail network and are part of a broader commitment to better public transport and connected communities.

Reduced travel delays

Removing level crossings helps reduce congestion and helps economic productivity.

Better station accessibility

By building a ramp, the station becomes more accessible for everyone.

Project background

We made it safer to access Homai Station by closing the level crossings in preparation for the opening of the City Rail Link (CRL).

Improvements included:

  • a new ramp to replace the stairs from Browns Road to Homai Station platform
  • Browns Road, Mcvilly Road footpath widening to 1.8m
  • new streetlights on Mcvilly and Browns Road, and along the new footpath to the park and ride bus stop
  • a new staircase between the park and ride and Browns Road
  • landscaping and planting of native plants along the railway corridor
  • new fencing along the railway corridor.
This map shows where improvements have been made, including the location of the new ramp. The existing accessible concrete path between the park and ride and Browns Road remains as it was.
