Planning a harbour event
Before holding a harbour event, make sure you:
- check that your event does not clash with any other major activity on the water, overlapping events could put participants at risk
- assess whether you’ve made adequate provision for navigation safety and determine if you need an exemption from any bylaws
- assess whether you've planned for navigation safety, and check if you need an exemption from any bylaws
- apply for an exemption if your event includes powered craft exceeding 5 knots when approaching or leaving the beach
Check if you need an event permit issued by Auckland Council. If required, the Events Facilitation team can liaise with the Harbourmaster’s office on your behalf.
Visit the Auckland Council website for more information on applying for an event permit.
Harbour racing buoys
To protect important navigation aids, there is a series of permanent yellow buoys positioned around the harbour for racing purposes.
Download the harbour racing buoys chart and positions (PDF, 810KB).
The Harbourmaster's office has inflatable buoys available for event organisers. These inflatable buoys can be used by any group for their harbour event.
We can assist you with safety precautions. We can help you check the weather and shipping movements during the event. We can also arrange for patrol boats to monitor the event.
