Project details

Start date

September 2025

End date

June 2026

Location

Wairere Avenue and Kitenui Avenue intersection, Mount Albert

Transport involved

Walking, driving, bus and cycling

Overview

We’re making it safer and easier for people to cross the road at the intersection of Wairere Avenue, Kitenui Avenue, and New North Road, Mt Albert.

We are:

  • upgrading and enlarging pedestrian refuge islands at Wairere Avenue and Kitenui Avenue (intersection with New North Road)
  • upgrading pram crossings to meet current standards
  • beautifying and levelling footpaths.

Changes outside Parkside Cafe include:

  • formalising the former bus stop area as parking to provide two new spaces
  • introducing a P60 (60 minute) parking restriction, Monday to Sunday. Current clearway hours still apply.

Parking and loading zone changes include:

  • repurposing two P30 (30 minute) spaces on Kitenui Avenue outside New World to allow for a Goods Vehicle Loading Zone (GVLZ), operating 8am to 6pm, Monday to Sunday.
  • parking will be unrestricted outside these hours, and available for anyone to use.

Project benefits

Safer streets

It'll be safer to cross at the intersection, improving access to shops and bus stops.

Improved accessibility

Footpath and road accessibility will be better for all, including people with prams or mobility aids.

Better for business

We're supporting local businesses and services with better parking and loading options.

Enhanced streetscapes

The street will be beautified and enhanced, making it a nicer place to be.

Project background

These changes are part of a bigger transport plan. Auckland Transport, local boards and ward councillors are working together to prioritise and address local road safety concerns.
