Starting the boat disposal process

If you no longer use your boat, if maintenance costs more than it’s worth, or if it’s no longer seaworthy, disposal might be the next step. Explore your disposal options to ensure it’s done safely and responsibly.

The best thing you can do is choose a reputable disposal operator. They’ll know how to safely remove any hazardous materials and recycle what they can, so your boat does not end up harming the environment.

If you’re not sure where to begin, the Auckland Harbourmaster’s office can help guide you through the steps. Email the Harbourmaster's office for more information.

Cost of boat disposal

The cost of scrapping or disposing a boat depends on its size and type. If your boat has recyclable parts like a lead keel or scrap metal, that can help lower the cost. Disposal companies will usually give you a quote.

It’s usually cheaper to get rid of an old boat properly than to wait until it sinks. If the boat sinks, the Harbourmaster’s office will hire contractors to salvage it, and the boat owner will be responsible for all costs. A planned disposal is the best option.

In some circumstances, the Harbourmaster’s office may be able to assist with an on-water tow to an authorised removal site. This would be arranged in conjunction with the disposal operator.

The Auckland-based operators listed are proven and experienced in this field of work. They’ll give you a full quote and let you know when they’re available.
