Overview

In 2024 Auckland Transport, along with the Rodney Local Board, implemented a new one-way bus service in Warkworth – route 999. The purpose is to improve local commuters’ access to public transport.

The trial route has 12 bus stops:

  • Warkworth Community Transport Hub on Great North Road
  • 44 Walton Avenue
  • 49 Walton Avenue
  • 20 to 26 Neville Street (near the RSA and town hall)
  • 3A Percy Street (near the Warkworth War Memorial Library)
  • 11 Alnwick Street (near the medical centre)
  • 25 Lilburn Street
  • opposite 7 Pulham Road
  • 15 Woodcocks Road (outside Mahurangi College)
  • opposite 25 Mansel Drive (outside Summerset Falls Retirement Village)
  • 62 Hill Street
  • 40 Hill Street (near Warkworth Primary School).

The 999 bus travels one-way in a clockwise direction approximately every 30 minutes.

The trial will run until 2027. We will continue to monitor and review the route and make improvements as needed. A final decision on the outcome of the trial will be made after this, using data collected during the trial period.

June 2026 changes

We will be making timetable changes to route 999 from 14 June 2026.

Services will start slightly later in the mornings. The bus will run from 07:15am, seven days a week (instead of 06:15am and 06:45am on weekdays and 05:45am and 06:15am on weekends).

This change comes after the Rodney Local Board requested AT to review the route usage, and we found that the early morning trips were the least utilised.

Latest updates

After engaging with the Warkworth community and receiving feedback, we changed the original plan and installed a new footpath on Alnwick Street, providing better connections for pedestrians. This footpath completes the link from the medical centre to the corner of Southgate Road.

Community and local board feedback at the start of the project saw the inclusion of a new bus stop at 20-26 Neville Street (near the RSA and town centre) and relocation of the existing bus stop from 23 Percy Street to 11 Alnwick Street.

The Neville Street stop allows people to easily access the town centre. It also improves accessibility to childcare facilities, kindergarten and the RSA.

Percy Street’s steep gradient made it difficult for some passengers to access the bus safely. Moving the stop to Alnwick Street provides a flatter and safer option, with an existing shelter and seating available for passengers.
