Walking, driving and busOverview
We’ve heard from members of the community about vehicle speeds and pedestrian crossing safety on Fowlds Avenue, following serious crashes. Although Fowlds Avenue is not directly by a school many students from nearby schools use it during busy times.
We are proposing to upgrade the two existing crossing facilities on Fowlds Avenue with raised zebra crossings. As well as requiring vehicles to stop for pedestrians to cross, these will reduce average vehicle speeds along the whole road. This effect will mostly be between the two crossings — which will become an extended safe zone.
Latest updates
To enhance safety for everyone on Fowlds Avenue we propose to install two raised pedestrian crossings. These will be installed outside numbers 51 and 33 Fowlds Avenue. The crossings will have:
- long ramps which provide a gentle departure, minimising noise and vibration
- wide central islands to reduce crossing distance and encourage motorists to slow
- modern pram ramps with yellow tactile pavers to highlight the crossing points — especially for those with limited or no vision
- improved lighting to make sure people are visible at all times — with lamps shielded to lower light pollution into nearby houses
- line markings and signage to emphasise the crossings and make drivers more aware that school children are present in the area.
