Project details

Start date

Late 2026

End date

Late 2032

Location

Takanini, South Auckland

Transport involved

Walking, driving, train and cycling

Overview

Opening City Rail Link in 2026 will mean trains on the Southern Line will run every 5 to 8 minutes during peak hours. Replacing level crossings with bridges in Takanini will allow more trains to run while improving safety and keeping traffic moving.

We plan to build 7 new bridges in the Takanini community. This includes the new pedestrian bridges at Te Mahia and Takanini stations which started construction this year (2025).

The 5 other proposed bridges are:

  • Spartan Road (closing the level crossing and replacing it with a walking and cycling bridge)
  • Manuia Road (building a new vehicle bridge from Great South Road to Oakleigh Avenue)
  • Manuroa Road (closing the level crossing and replacing it with a walking and cycling bridge)
  • Taka Street (closing the level crossing and building a new vehicle bridge)
  • Walters Road (closing the level crossing and building a new vehicle bridge).

Summary of our September 2025 community engagement

In September 2025 we held engagement sessions. We asked for feedback to understand how we can keep vehicles, those on foot and cyclists moving while building new bridges.

Feedback

The themes from respondents included:

  • better walking and cycling connections are needed, including safe pedestrian crossings
  • traffic and congestion are already a major concern for the community
  • bridge designs should reflect and respect the local community
  • community spaces matter, as homes get smaller, parks and shared spaces like BBQ areas become more important
  • construction impacts must be managed carefully, ensuring access to local businesses and shops is maintained
  • personal safety is a priority and considered through urban design decisions and project delivery
  • growth and change in the area are significant, adding pressure on existing infrastructure and space.
Additional feedback

We also had feedback on things outside of the project scope. Respondents discussed:

Bus services

  • more shelters and services needed (Porchester Road, Conifer Grove)
  • flooding at Station Rd bus stop.

Train services

  • more parking at Takanini Station
  • suggestion for a new station at Walters Road.

Roads and footpaths

  • concerns about width, parking, and access
  • need for clear lanes, parking management, and dedicated bus bays
  • maintenance issues including cracks, potholes, missing walking and cycling links
  • long-term maintenance planning for bridges, bus stops, and truck routes.

Next steps

We’ll engage with the community and key stakeholders again in the new year as we seek to gain detailed feedback on concept designs.

September 2025 - community engagement

We talked to stakeholders and the community about the project and the benefits of replacing level crossings. We wanted to learn what’s important to Takanini and what we need to consider when we’re designing and constructing the bridges.

For September’s engagement we made the project information available in 4 languages and held:

  • 6 community events
  • 6 focus groups
  • 12 in-depth interviews
  • more than 10 drop-in sessions with key stakeholders
  • 71 community survey responses.

We asked about:

  • roads and structures
  • walking and cycling paths
  • street features
  • improving the neighbourhood
  • landscaping and planting
  • ongoing maintenance
  • managing disruption.
October 2025 - feedback closed

Thank you for providing feedback during our consultation period.

Your feedback will help inform the design and construction planning for the 5 bridges in Takanini.

Timeline

Design and construction planning

In progress
October 2025 to late 2026

We’ll engage with stakeholders and the community to update and finalise designs. We'll look at how everything connects to make your journeys safer, easier and more enjoyable.

Phased construction

Upcoming
Starts late 2026

Construction will be done in phases to manage disruption. We'll share more information about what to expect closer to the time.

Main works complete

Upcoming
Late 2032

We expect to complete all works by late 2032.

Project benefits

Reduced travel delays

Removing level crossings helps reduce congestion and helps economic productivity.

Safer journeys for everyone

Level crossings increase safety risk and make travel times longer as there's more trains. If we don’t remove or replace them people may take more risks as barrier arms are down more often.

Supports more frequent trains

Removing level crossings helps futureproof the rail network and is part of a broader commitment to better public transport and connected communities.

Project background

Planning work has been taking place since 2022 with Supporting Growth Alliance and we’re now moving into the delivery phase. This includes updating and finalising designs by looking at how everything connects to make your journeys safer, easier and more enjoyable.
