Project details

Start date

September 2025

End date

February 2026

Location

Surrey Crescent and Old Mill Road, Grey Lynn

Transport involved

Walking, driving and cycling

Overview

The Surrey Crescent and Old Mill Road improvements include:

  • cycle lanes on the road
  • cycle lanes on the berm
  • a shared walking and cycling path
  • improving pedestrian crossings
  • raising the pedestrian crossing at the Grey Lynn School entrance
  • road narrowing outside Grey Lynn School
  • new road surface
  • short stay parking outside Grey Lynn School (school hours only).

These are cost-effective, quick and easy changes to implement. We will deliver these alongside planned road maintenance work to minimise construction time and cost.

Work started on 20 September 2025 and will be completed in January 2026.

We are creating a safer and more pleasant environment for people of all ages to get to shops, schools and parks and support people’s commutes.

This is part of a wider programme of works to improve transport routes in the inner west (Grey Lynn to Point Chevalier) connecting to the city centre and other destinations.

Project benefits

Safer streets

A safer and more pleasant environment for people of all ages to get around locally to shops, schools and parks.

Better connections

Along with the Great North Road improvements, this project will form a key route from this area to Karangahape Rd, the universities and the hospital.

Safer for school kids

Safer for children to travel independently or with their carers to Grey Lynn School by foot, scooter, bike, or bus.

Better for local business

Providing a safer and more pleasant space will encourage more people to visit local shops.

Project background

Most work will be completed by the end of 2025 with some planting, road resurfacing and road marking carried out in 2026.

We appreciate there have been several road works projects locally. We are carefully planning this work to minimise disruption as much as possible.

What you need to know

  • Work will take place on Surrey Crescent and Old Mill Road, between Prime Road and Francis Street. Work started outside Grey Lynn School and is progressing towards Old Mill Road.
  • We’ll be working Monday to Saturday, between 7:00am and 7:00pm, except for nightworks for road resurfacing and road marking. Nightwork allows for full road closures, ensuring high-quality finish and faster completion.
  • We will be planting new native trees to supplement local planting and replace seven trees we will need to remove. These are mostly small specimen, poor condition trees and two dead trees which need to be safely removed.
  • Work will be completed maintaining traffic flow in both directions on Surrey Crescent. Some intersections closures may be required. Detours will be set up to access side streets.
  • We will provide regular updates to those directly affected by the work and advance notice of nightwork.

We need to remove a small number of car parks for safety reasons. These include where we need to improve visibility at pedestrian crossings or provide more space for buses to pull in and out of bus stops safely.

Of approximately 177 parking spaces along the route, only 13 spaces will be removed. No parking immediately adjacent to businesses will be removed.

To help inform and finalise the design ahead of construction we spent the last year gathering feedback from stakeholders and the local community.

We'd like to thank the organisations, businesses and locals who have provided their input and shared their views.

After considering all the feedback, we made the following changes:

Section 1 - Surrey Cresent (by Grey Lynn School)
  • included short stay parking restrictions (school hours only) opposite Grey Lynn School
  • shortened the length of the proposed short stay area (school hours only) outside the school.
Section 2 – Surrey Cresent (near Richmond Road intersection to the Bullock Track)
  • added an on-road cycle lane on the north side of the road that goes from near the Bullock Track to Stanmore Road. To create space for the cycle lane without impacting kerbside parking we will remove the flush median in this section of road
  • standardised parking restrictions by the shops to improve parking for customers.
Section 3 – Old Mill Road
  • changed parking time limits outside the Garnet Road shops to improve parking for customers
  • planned road resurfacing on Old Mill Road will be carried out in the next 3-6 years and the on-road cycling improvements in this section will be delivered at the same time.
All sections
  • kerb build outs on some side roads. This is to reduce crossing distances for people on foot and helps to foster slower vehicle turning speeds.

The consultation summary report contains an overview of the feedback received, design suggestions and our responses.

We have been upgrading travel routes in Auckland’s inner west (Point Chevalier to Grey Lynn) to make it easier to get around by foot, scooter, bike, car and bus.

There are a number of routes either already built, under construction, or planned that make up the network for the inner west.

The Surrey Crescent and Old Mill Road improvements project will help connect all of these routes together. Along with the Great North Road improvements, this project will form a key route from this area to Karangahape Rd, the universities and the hospital.
