What it is
A Safe School Travel Plan is developed with our support, the school can identify its key travel challenges and choose priorities that feel right for its community, which might be:
- reducing school gate congestion
- strengthening road safety learning
- encouraging walking, cycling, scootering and public transport.
The plan can include a mix of practical initiatives across the school year, from classroom learning and promotional activities to addressing parking issues and establishing walking school buses.
A Safe School Travel Plan can start small and grow over time. By using a whole-school approach involving the wider school community, including senior leaders, the school board, parents, whānau, students and partners such as the School Community Officer, the plan builds shared ownership, supports meaningful learning in and beyond the classroom, and helps create long-term change.
Aim
To guide schools in addressing key road safety and travel priorities through a whole-school approach that supports safer, more active and sustainable travel, while involving students, staff, parents, whānau and community partners.
