What it is
Crossing promotions include a variety of school activities designed to raise awareness within the school and the wider community of the importance of using a Zebra, Kea or traffic light crossing.
The relevant crossing resources can be delivered to your school, and we can support you to run the activity.
One of the key activities involves students holding placards in view of traffic and pedestrians using a school crossing. Just before or after the school day works well.
Aim
This activity aims to increase driver mindfulness and caution around school crossings, creating safer conditions for all pedestrians. It also reminds students, parents and whānau to cross at formal crossing facilities.
Learning opportunities
Students are shown how to confidently use dedicated crossings by practising 'Stop, Look and Listen!' when crossing the road. Safe crossing behaviour also includes what to look out for at the roadside and checking that cars have stopped before starting to cross.
Back in the classroom, students can complete an activity sheet explaining crossings and how to use them safely.
