What it is

Schools are areas of high student and vehicle traffic. Reducing speed around these roads ensures the safety of everyone.

Working with an Auckland Transport School Travel Coordinator, students learn how to use a handheld speed radar. They will use the radar to collect vehicle speed data from a safe position at the side of one or more roads around the school. When available, your local School Community Officer can support you with this initiative.

Aim

This hands-on initiative enables students to monitor driver behaviour and raise driver awareness of the speed limit on roads around schools.

Students can share their knowledge with the rest of the school and local school community.

Learning opportunities

Back in the classroom, students can use the speed data for a statistical analysis. This can include the number of vehicles, the number of speeding drivers and, mean, median and mode speed calculations.

The data can then be used in a school-wide campaign that reminds the school community of the speed limit and encourages drivers to slow down around the school.
