What it is
The Bike Ambassador programme is a student leadership initiative for primary and intermediate schools. Selected student ‘ambassadors’ are trained to promote cycling, model safe riding behaviour, and help build a bike-friendly school culture. These students should be interested in cycling and motivated to support safe, confident riding across their school community.
The School Travel Coordinator can support schools to plan student-led cycling activities and provide follow-up support after the workshop, depending on school need and available capacity.
Additional support may be available for schools with bike tracks or bike sheds to help make the most of these facilities.
Aim
The initiative aims to increase the number of students cycling to and from school, support safer journeys, and create lasting behaviour change by helping students gain essential bike knowledge, develop leadership skills, and lead cycling activities at school.
Learning opportunities
Students will have the opportunity to build practical cycling knowledge and confidence by:
- learning basic bike maintenance and helmet checks
- developing safe riding habits
- exploring ways to encourage these behaviours in others.
The programme also supports students to grow their leadership skills through peer support and positive role modelling, while giving them experience in planning and promoting bike-to-school days and other cycling events.
Students can also share their feedback on cycling facilities and initiatives at school, helping to strengthen student voice and support ongoing improvements.
Available resources
As part of this initiative, we can arrange:
- a one-day Bike Ambassador workshop for up to 8–10 students and one staff member
- workshop delivery by our trained providers
