What it is
Students work alongside school leadership to identify safe, accessible drop-off points and develop one or more Park and Walk maps for the school community. A School Travel Coordinator can provide support with creating the maps.
Aim
A Park and Walk map shows parents and whānau where to drop off children safely and efficiently, without needing to wait in traffic close to the school. Highlighting convenient locations where students, parents and whānau can park and walk the final distance, can help to reduce congestion around the school gate.
The initiative also encourages students to use active travel modes such as walking, biking, or scootering for part of their journey.
Learning opportunities
Students investigate how transport choices affect safety, congestion, and wellbeing around their school. They develop spatial awareness and problem‑solving skills by identifying safe, accessible drop‑off locations and learn how to map walking routes.
Available resources

- walking and cycling maps to support planning
- a finalised digital and physical Park and Walk map (once developed)
- high visibility vests for site walks.
