WalkingOverview
Auckland Transport is upgrading the footpath on Clarks Beach Road outside the Waiau Pā Hockey Club.
We received requests from the community to improve access along this section of road. At the moment, there is a missing footpath link, which makes it harder for people to walk safely, use mobility aids, push prams, or access the park and nearby facilities.
This project focuses on closing that gap and improving safety and accessibility.
The improvements we’re making
- Installing around 55m of new footpath in front of the Waiau Pā Hockey Club.
- Realigning the existing driveway so it connects smoothly with the new footpath.
- Adding a new grass berm, kerb and drainage channel.
A drawing showing what these improvements look like will be shared as part of this project.
How this benefits the community
- Makes it easier and safer for everyone to get around, whether you’re walking, using a mobility aid or pushing a pram.
- Fills a missing footpath link so people no longer need to walk or wheel on grass or uneven ground.
How this upgrade fits into the wider walking network
We are closing a small but important missing footpath link outside the Waiau Pā Hockey Club. This upgrade improves safety and accessibility for people walking or wheeling along this section of Clarks Beach Road.
It also supports the longer-term goal of improving walking connections along Clarks Beach Road, where a wider Clarks Beach to Waiau Pā walking and cycling path is being planned through the Franklin Paths Programme.
That wider project is being progressed by a different team and aims to create a safer route for tamariki to walk and cycle to school, along with better walking access for the wider community.
While this upgrade is a standalone Auckland Transport project, it contributes to the future walking network by completing part of the route now, ahead of the larger path project.
Email franklinpathsandtrails@aucklandcouncil.govt.nz if you have questions about the wider Franklin Paths Programme.
