Project details

Start date

20 October 2026

End date

30 June 2027

Location

Matakohe Road and Pua Street, Westgate

Transport involved

Walking, driving and bus

Overview

We are proposing safety improvements in Westgate at the intersection of:

  • Fred Taylor Drive
  • Pua Street
  • Matakohe Road.

This is in response to concerns raised by the community.

Our investigation found that the current intersection layout can be confusing for drivers. The proposed changes will make it clearer and safer for everyone.

The changes

We're proposing to:

  • shift the central traffic island to the western side of the right-turn bay into Matakohe Road, better protecting vehicles waiting to turn
  • remove all the temporary flexi-posts installed at this intersection
  • install a traffic island in the centre of the entrance to Pua Street to help drivers align correctly when entering or leaving the street
  • install ‘no right turn’ signage from Fred Taylor Drive into Pua Street
  • install a crossing island in the centre of Fred Taylor Drive, with kerb ramps on each side of the road to provide a safer crossing point.
