We’ve heard from the community that pick-up and drop-off at Middlemore Station can be difficult, particularly at busy times. When vehicles stop in informal or unsafe places, it creates risks for people walking, cycling and driving.
To solve this, we’re proposing a dedicated, short stay pick-up and drop-off (PUDO) area near Middlemore Station on Orakau Road.
A dedicated PUDO area would improve safety and access and help keep traffic moving around the station.
What we're proposing
- Changing the existing 11 angled parking spaces into a parallel PUDO area on the northern side of Orakau Road.
- Installing 4 designated parallel parking spaces on the southern side of the road.
- Installing a new pedestrian shelter to provide a designated place for pedestrians to wait as well as new lighting to improve visibility and safety.
- Installing 1 designated mobility parking space and new pram crossing.
The existing kerb and channel, and kerb build out, will be cut back at the eastern end and the existing streetlight will be brought back onto the berm. The kerb cutback is proposed to make it easier for vehicles parked at the eastern-most end of the pick-up/drop-off area to pull out and turn around.
Note that there have also been design changes regarding paid parking. At this stage, parking will be time restricted only (P90) for the non PUDO spaces with no charge. This will be reviewed at a later date.
