Overview

We are planning to make changes at the Nelson Street and Union Street intersection.

This is a busy intersection for everyone. These changes are designed to make it safer and easier for people to cross the road and move through the intersection, especially for people who walk, wheel, use mobility aids, or push prams.

Improvements we're making

Changes include:

  • adding a new pedestrian crossing
  • upgrading the Union Street slip lane crossing
  • upgrading footpaths with pram crossings and tactile pavers
  • adding high-friction surfacing.

Project benefits

Safer crossings

Makes it safer and easier for people to cross the road, whether walking, wheeling, using a mobility aid, or pushing a pram.

Better accessibility

Improves accessibility with new pram crossings and tactile paving, supporting people with disabilities.

Better walking and cycling connections

Strengthens connections to the Pink Shared Path (Te Ara i Whiti).

More people friendly

Supports a more connected, people-friendly city centre.

Project background

There is a separate Nelson Street Laneway project planned in this area delivered by Auckland Council. It is not part of these intersection improvements.

Auckland Council will provide more information to the community about the laneway project when their plans are finalised.
