Overview

The northwest bus improvements will provide more reliable bus journeys and better links both locally and into the city centre.

We’ve already introduced:

  • the WX1 bus service, travelling every 10 to 15 minutes to the city centre
  • better bus lanes on the Northwestern Motorway (SH16)
  • new electric buses.

These are just the start for better public transport for northwest Auckland.

The WX1 is now one of Auckland’s busiest bus routes. Patronage has kept growing since it started in 2023. 

We’re working with Waka Kotahi to deliver a busway to move even more people efficiently along the Northwestern Motorway.

The improvements will be part of the Northwest Busway – Te Ara Hauāuru (opens in a new tab).

Latest updates

The new Westgate Te Waiarohia bus station will be at the heart of the connected public transport network for northwest Auckland.

The station will be sheltered, well-lit and secure. It will connect bus users with local buses and express buses to the city centre.

There will be links to:

  • Helensville
  • Huapai
  • Kumeu
  • Whenuapai
  • Riverhead
  • West Harbour
  • Massey
  • Red Hills
  • Lincoln Road
  • Te Atatu
  • the city centre.

Project background

The northwest is growing. By 2046, it will have:

  • 37,000 new houses
  • 11,000 new jobs
  • nearly triple the number of people travelling along the Northwestern Motorway (SH16).

People living in the northwest have few options for travelling to work, study and social activities.

Better bus services will encourage more people to take the bus. This will lower traffic congestion and carbon emissions.

The WX1 runs every 10 minutes between Westgate and the city centre from the morning peak until 9pm. It then runs every 15 minutes until 11:30pm.

Bus stops at Lincoln Road, Te Atatū Road, Karangahape Road and the city centre link to frequent bus services, ferry services and trains to get you to more places.

The WX1 will use the bus lanes on the motorway shoulder:

  • during peak travel periods
  • when there is congestion on the Northwest Motorway.

Westgate Te Waiarohia bus station will be used by routes:

  • WX1

  • 111
  • 112
  • 114
  • 115
  • 116
  • 122
  • 123
  • 125
  • 126.
Route 12 will not use the bus station

This is because route 12 would need to take a detour to get to the bus station. This would add a lot of travel time for the people travelling through Westgate on the bus.

You will be able to get on route 12 at Fernhill Drive.

There will not be a park and ride

Westgate Te Waiarohia bus station will not have a park and ride.

To see if there is a local bus service to get you to the station, check our Journey Planner. There is paid parking available at Westgate from other providers.

There will be pick-up and drop-off spaces outside the station on Gunton Drive.
