Overview

Newmarket is one of Auckland’s busiest retail, commercial and residential areas. With more people living, working and visiting, demand for limited street space is growing.

With approximately 6,000 parking spaces available in the area (including 3,000 in Westfield), we’re prioritising the remaining public spaces to ensure fair and equitable access for everyone.

Exciting developments are on the way which will boost foot traffic and add convenience for locals and visitors. We’re improving access with new loading zones and clearly marked pick-up/ drop-off areas. These upgrades are designed to support local businesses, ease congestion, and make Broadway more welcoming for everyone.

We want Newmarket’s streets and parking to work well for residents, businesses and visitors.

We regularly make small changes to parking in Newmarket but now’s the opportunity to take a big picture look and consider all kerbside space in the area collectively.

Project background

Auckland is growing and changing, and this impacts where people park.

Our streets are under increasing pressure to cater for a wide variety of needs within a finite road space, and simply widening these roads isn’t possible in many parts of the city.

Parking needs to be carefully managed so that our busy main roads can carry as many people and goods as possible, while being dynamic allowing these spaces to meet a variety of users and uses. We also need to ensure parking is available in our communities for those who need it.

In 2023 we updated our parking strategy following a comprehensive consultation process. More than 1,500 Aucklanders shared their views, helping shape a plan that explains how we manage parking and how this supports a better transport system for everyone. The strategy promotes more dynamic use of roads and streets so that road space can be used in different ways at different times of day, depending on travel demand.

We know every area is different. That’s why we regularly review parking across Auckland to identify where smarter parking management can help keep your city moving.
