Overview

Before June 2027, we're planning to:

  • widen the road to create space for the new flush median, helping everyone turn safely and easily
  • change the intersection control from ‘Give Way’ to ‘STOP’
  • realign the grass berm and swale drain where needed
  • improve the road surface, signs, and road markings where required.

Project benefits

Better traffic flow

The ‘STOP’ control will provide extra observation time and make it safer when crossing the intersection.

Safer turning movements

The flush median and ‘STOP’ control will help manage turning movements and reduce the crash risk at this high-risk intersection.

Clearer road layout

Road surface, signs and road markings upgrades will create a clearer and more legible intersection layout.

Project background

We are working to improve at high‐risk intersections across Auckland.

This project aims to improve safety at the intersection of Papakura–Clevedon Road, Mullins Road and Petersons Road. This intersection has been identified as a high-risk location under Auckland Transport’s High-Risk Intersections Programme.

The intersection has a poor crash history involving turning movements and currently features a lack of pedestrian crossing facilities.

The proposal is expected to significantly reduce the likelihood of crashes at the intersection and enhance the safety for all road users.

Crash history

Between 2020 and 2024, eight crashes were recorded, with one resulting in a serious injury and two resulting in minor injuries.

Notably, two of the injury crashes (one serious and one minor) involved vehicles waiting to turn right into Mullins Road being struck from behind.
