Overview

We need to replace the Inga Road Bridge, built in 1926, to ensure a safe and reliable crossing for vehicles and people on foot in Milford.

The bridge is just north of Milford Shopping Centre and will need to be closed during construction. We're exploring how this will work to ensure a successful outcome for the entire community.

We’re progressing designs and once ready, we’ll share our plans with the community.

While the bridge replacement will be a “like for like” bridge, we are still investigating specific details to ensure it meets modern standards and community needs, including providing footpaths on both sides of the bridge.

In December 2025, we published our Engagement Report.

Next we will:

  • Finalise the detailed designs of the bridge, incorporating community input where possible.
  • Share updated plans with the community through this webpage and direct engagement with locals.
  • Share construction methodology, including detour routes, bus impacts, traffic mitigations and plans on journey alternatives once construction methodology is completed.
  • Continue engagement with key stakeholders throughout the project lifecycle.

Latest updates

We're pleased to share that we completed the tender process for Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) in April 2026 and awarded the ECI contract to Fulton Hogan.

Work with our ECI partner commenced in May 2026.

We are collaborating with AECOM and Fulton Hogan to develop a constructible and efficient design to minimise construction disruption and reduce the duration of any full road closures required.

We expect to complete the detailed design and obtain the necessary consents by mid-2027, followed by construction shortly after.

The construction schedule is yet to be confirmed, but it will become clearer as the design progresses.

Next steps

1. Later this year as designs progress, we will share a community update to keep everyone informed about project progress.

This will be followed by construction communications shortly thereafter. This community update will contain expected construction and disruption details.

2. Apply for and get consents.

3. Finalise designs, organise the work contract and continue planning for construction.

4. We will contact neighbouring property owners impacted by the project. Our project team will meet to discuss the impacts and mitigations once designs are finalised and refined ahead of construction.

Key stakeholders including mana whenua, advocacy groups, schools, emergency services, public transport operators and businesses will be given updates on the design once finalised and construction dates are confirmed.

We thank you for your patience and support to deliver these improvements.

Project benefits

Reliability

The new bridge will meet modern standards and provide secure passage for all vehicles and people on foot.

Removed restrictions

Weight restrictions on the bridge prevent heavy vehicles from crossing. A new bridge would remove restrictions on this route.

Resilience

The bridge is over 100 years old and is at the end of its service life.
