Whangaparāoa Road dynamic lane improvements

Whangaparāoa Road carries heavy traffic at peak times, especially for people travelling to and from the peninsula. To help manage congestion, Auckland Transport introduced the Whangaparāoa Dynamic Lane in early 2018.

The lane changes with traffic demand. It uses overhead lane control signals and in-road LED studs to show how many lanes are operating in each direction. Yellow studs mark no-passing lines and separate opposing traffic during three-lane operation. White studs create a flush median.

As part of the next scheduled reseal, planned within the next two years, we are considering replacing the 550 white LED studs with painted road markings. Trials on Maioro Street and Panmure Bridge showed this approach works well. Painted markings would reduce ongoing maintenance while still giving people clear lane guidance.

We are also reviewing whether the yellow centre-line LED studs are still needed. We are seeking feedback from local residents and road users to help inform that decision.

We are also exploring making the dynamic lane adaptive. This would allow the Auckland Transport Operations Centre to adjust operating times when needed.
