Walking, driving, bus and cyclingOverview
In October 2025, we proposed changes to the intersection of Grande Vue Road and Hill Road and access to the State Highway 1 motorway on-ramp.
The changes would:
- improve pedestrian safety for those walking to the Auckland Botanic Gardens, local shops, and eateries
- improve road operation
- include two new lanes on Grande Vue Road to the motorway
- remove the confusion at the Grande Vue Road and Hill Road intersection because of the unusual layout, where left-turning traffic from Hill Road has priority over right-turning traffic.
Our proposal was developed with the New Zealand Transport Agency to address community safety concerns.
After carefully reviewing the feedback we received, we are proceeding with a minor change - as requested by the community, we are currently exploring the possibility of retaining some parking with clearway restrictions on Hill Road at the tail end of the eastbound approach to the proposed signals.
This will be investigated further during the detailed design stage.

Project benefits
Improved safety
The project fixes current safety and traffic issues at the Grande Vue Road and Hill Road intersection, making it safer for people driving, walking and cycling.
Easier crossing for pedestrians
New traffic lights give people a safe amount of time to cross when they need it, including people with disabilities.
Better access to local places
The changes make it easier for people to walk to the Auckland Botanic Gardens, nearby shops and local places to eat.
Smoother traffic flow
Two new lanes and better‑coordinated traffic lights with the motorway ramps help traffic move more smoothly and reduce congestion.
Project background
- Installing traffic lights at the intersection of Grand Vue Road and Hill Road to help manage traffic on this busy intersection and give priority to people on foot to cross the road when needed - the new traffic lights will be co-ordinated with the nearby on-and-off ramps signals and monitored alongside the ramp signals to maximise efficiency.
- Creating two traffic lanes on Grande Vue Road to the SH1 on-ramp for ease of access to the SH1 motorway on-ramp.
- Rebuilding footpaths and install yellow tactile pavers at the crossing points to help people find their way to crossings and safely cross the road.
- Installing new traffic islands and kerb ramps at the intersection of Grande Vue Road with SH1 on ramp.
- Removing some parking to accommodate the intersection changes.
- Treating the approaches to the intersection of Grande Vue Road with the SH1 on-ramp to a skid-resistant road surface.
- Installing new signage and paint new road markings to support the proposed changes.
