Overview

We are proposing to improve safety at high‐risk intersections throughout Auckland.

The intersection at Great South Road and Pitt Road is currently the most dangerous in Auckland. Between 2020 and 2024, there were 13 crashes at this intersection, with 10 caused by drivers not giving way when coming from the southern end of Pitt Road. NZ Police have also highlighted this as a significant safety concern.

We’re proposing a temporary solution to improve these safety issues while we look into a more permanent fix, such as installing a roundabout. This will help make the intersection safer for everyone right now, as we plan for a long-term upgrade in the future.

Before June 2027 we're planning to:

  • install a traffic island on Pitt Road, on the south side of the intersection
  • widen Pitt Road on the south side of the intersection
  • improve the road surface, signs, and road markings where needed.

Project benefits

Better visibility

New kerb layouts and a traffic island will provide better visibility for drivers travelling through this intersection and make it safer for all road users.

Safer turning movements

The traffic island and road markings will provide better delineation and help manage turning movements to reduce the crash risk at this high-risk intersection.

Reinforcement of the existing Give Way

Kerb, traffic island, and road-marking upgrades will create a clearer, more legible intersection layout and improve the existing Give Way.
