Sandspit wharf repair works

Recent inspections at Sandspit Wharf found deterioration in several under-wharf areas such as piles and braces. We're now planning works to repair the wharf. 

To help keep people safe and protect the structure, we've put temporary vehicle restrictions in place while we finalise the repair plan. Pedestrians can still access the wharf, and ferry services are still operating.

Repair work is expected to start in July. Our work dates are subject to weather, final scope, and the availability of materials. It may be that we have to complete the work in multiple stages rather than all at once.

We'll let you know more details when the work begins, and during construction if anything changes. We understand this work may cause some inconvenience. We'll do our best to minimise disruption while prioritising safety.

What we're planning

We're currently planning to fully rebuild the worse wing of the wharfhead, along with a significant number of components around it. This is to try to avoid the need to have to go back to the wharf in 2 to 5 years to replace more items that are currently in a moderate condition.

The repair work at the wharf will be like-for-like with minor material changes to increase longevity. 

Open for public feedback

As part of this work, we're seeking feedback on a proposed stair design at the wharfhead.

Instead of replacing the existing large staircase, we propose two separate sets of stairs with a central handrail, removing the existing inner section of stairs.

This design provides a practical and durable path making it cost-effective and easier to maintain, while maintaining safe access for wharf users.

At a drop-in session on Thursday 4 June, we shared the proposed designs with the community and invited feedback. After community input, the stairs are expected to be 1650mm wide, to match the width of similar stairs at this wharf.
