We’re planning safety improvements on Westney Road outside Al-Madinah School. Our changes will make it safer and easier for tamariki, whānau and the wider community to cross the road.
We’ve heard concerns from Al-Madinah School and Zayed College about the safety of people crossing Westney Road. They are especially worried about school pick-up and drop-off times and other busy times of the day.
The existing crossing is managed by a school patrol during school times. It is becoming harder to operate because of heavy traffic and congestion on Westney Road. There has also been one reported pedestrian crash at this location.
To improve safety, we’re planning to install a new signalised pedestrian crossing outside Al-Madinah School.

Project background
The existing crossing is heavily used during school pick-up and drop-off times. Heavy traffic and congestion are making the school patrol crossing harder to operate safely. There has been one reported pedestrian crash here.
We will:
- install a new signalised pedestrian crossing outside Al-Madinah School
- remove the existing pedestrian refuge islands at the current crossing
- install broken yellow lines (no stopping) on the approaches to the crossing
- install tactile paving and pram crossings
- add high-friction road surfacing.
To improve visibility and safety at the crossing, we will remove:
- 3 parking spaces outside Al-Madinah School
- one parking space outside 27 Westney Road.
