Driving and busOverview
As Birkenhead and the surrounding communities continue to grow, traffic on Birkenhead Avenue is becoming increasingly busy.
During the morning and afternoon peak periods, parked vehicles can create pinch points that slow traffic, worsen congestion and reduce visibility.
To keep everyone moving safely and efficiently, we’re making changes around some clearways, bus stops and intersections on Birkenhead Avenue between Pupuke Road and Zion Road
What we're changing
- Adding a new weekday peak-hours clearway between 169 to 155 Birkenhead Avenue, heading towards Onewa Road. It will operate between 6:30 to 10am and 3 to 6pm, Monday to Friday.
- Updating hours at the existing clearway between 128 to 138 Birkenhead Avenue, heading towards Pupuke Road. It will now operate between 6:30 to 10am and 3 to 6pm, Monday to Friday.
- Adding new weekday afternoon peak-hour (3 to 6pm) parking restrictions in the T3 lane between Recreation Drive and Zion Road. All vehicles will still be able to travel in the T3 lane outside its normal operating hours (6:30 to 10am).
- Adding broken yellow lines around Pupuke Road and Recreation Drive intersections to help make turning safer and create more room for queuing.
- Minor upgrades at two bus stops to help buses pick up and drop off customers more efficiently.
This project complements the Birkenhead Avenue and Onewa Road intersection optimisation project. Together, these projects will make peak-time journeys smoother and more reliable for the thousands of people who travel along this important route into the city.
This work is being delivered through Auckland Network Optimisation, which makes targeted improvements to help Auckland's transport network operate more safely and efficiently.
