Auckland Transport (AT) is about to embark on a comprehensive asset and facility renewal of the Devonport Ferry Wharf and Terminal.

The renewal will focus on reconstructing Piers 1 and 2 and undertake a full refurbishment of the terminal waiting room. The project will cost $31 million and be completed over a three-year period.

North Shore Ward Councillor Richard Hills says the renewal is a crucial step in modernising public transport in the area.

“This is a fantastic and important investment in our public transport infrastructure. It brings resilience to the Devonport to City Centre route by replacing end-of-life Devonport ferry berths at Pier 1 and Pier 2.

“Additionally, the upgrades and improvements to the terminal, the entrances and the gangways will make it more modern, compliant, future-proofed for EV Ferry vessels, and optimised to enhance customer experience outcomes”, says Councillor Hills.

“Making the travel experience better for residents and visitors will continue to encourage the increase in patronage on our ferries and across the transport network.”

Fellow North Shore Councillor John Gillion says he’s pleased to see this important and long-awaited upgrade to the Devonport Ferry Wharf and Terminal moving ahead.

“It is an important investment to ensure that the Devonport community can continue to depend on the ferry for travel to and from the city. It will also ensure that tourists can continue to easily visit the heritage village and treasured maunga of Devonport.”

Trish Deans, Chair of the Devonport-Takapuna Local Board says the renewal will have a lasting effect.

“This investment and upgrade not only future proofs the wharf for future generations, it also recognises the importance of the wharf to the community.”

AT Chief Executive Stacey van der Putten says the project will revitalise one of Auckland’s most important public transport facilities.

“We will soon have two brand new electric hybrid fast ferries sailing the Devonport to Downtown route, and infrastructure at the Devonport Wharf must be fit for purpose.

“This renewal project will rejuvenate facilities for our passengers and ensure the Devonport Ferry Wharf and Terminal is up to a world class standard for many decades to come.”

Josh Hyland, AT Manager of Public Transport Facilities, Structures and Renewals says the project will improve the operational resilience of the terminal by replacing end-of-life ferry berths at both piers.

“Pier 1 and Pier 2 will be reconstructed to modern standards using resilient materials, while the waiting terminal will be refurbished to a high standard that Aucklanders can be proud of.

“The need to undertake essential renewal works on Pier 1 and 2 has presented an opportunity to integrate a range of customer focused improvements that will collectively, enhance the journey for all customers.”

How will the project affect the public transport experience for passengers?

The detailed design (see attached images) has been completed for Pier 2 and the terminal wating area, and resource consent has also been granted. The procurement phase will be undertaken between August and September this year, while construction is due to begin in December 2026.

Pier 2 and the terminal waiting area will be closed while this important renewal work is underway in these areas.  Pier 1 will remain open for all passenger ferry services, including access to the new electric hybrid ferries.

Once the work on Pier 2 is complete, the refurbished waiting area will be reopened to customers and all ferry services reallocated to the new Pier 2, so works can begin on Pier 1.

Undertaking the renewal project in stages will ensure that disruption is kept to a minimum.

While works progress on Pier 2, a temporary waiting room facility will be established in the multi-functional space adjacent to the existing terminal waiting area and fitted with HOP ticket machines, wayfinding and seating to ensure a seamless customer journey.

The boardwalk connection between the temporary waiting area and Pier 1 will be covered with a temporary canopy to ensure a continuous cover for customers.
