Project details

Start date

24 May 2026

End date

September 2026

Location

Birkenhead

Transport involved

Walking

Overview

We’re replacing the footpath pavers along Birkenhead Avenue, between Noodle Canteen and the Onewa Road intersection.

The current pavers are worn, uneven and need to be replaced.

We will be doing this from mid-May to September 2026. Work will take around 3.5 months to complete. We'll do our work in 3 sections, with excavation and concrete pouring done at night and pavers installed during the day.

The new pavers will have a concrete base underneath them to make them safer and more durable, like the footpath around Birkenhead Avenue roundabout. They'll have a flat, even surface, making walking easier through Birkenhead town centre.

What locals should know

  • The road will always remain open in both directions.
  • Sections of the footpath will be closed while the improvements are done.
  • Parking spaces on the eastern side of Birkenhead Avenue will be temporarily closed to store equipment and machinery.
  • Birkenhead shops will remain open throughout the works, with minimal disruptions to business frontage and access.
  • Business owners will be contacted and kept informed while the works take place.

Construction stages

Stage 1: from 24 May to mid-July

We'll work between 63 to 87 Birkenhead Avenue.

Stage 2: from mid-July to mid-August

We'll work between 29 to 63 Birkenhead Avenue.

Stage 3: from mid-August to early September

We'll work between 15 to 29 Birkenhead Avenue.

Project benefits

Safer footpaths to walk around locally

Even walking surfaces reduce trip hazards and improve pedestrian safety. It also improves accessibility for people with limited mobility, including smoother transitions.

Inviting people to spend time in town

A more attractive, high-quality footpath and public space supports local businesses and encourages people to spend time in Birkenhead town centre.

Durable footpath surfaces for the future

New, high-quality pavers match the paving design around the roundabout, which improves visual coherence and placemaking.
