Project details

Start date

June 2024

End date

July 2027

Location

Chapel Road, Flat Bush

Transport involved

Walking and cycling

Overview

Residents and the Howick Local Board have raised concerns around a missing section of footpath on Chapel Road, between Ormiston Road and St Luke’s Church.

After considering the limitations of the road as well as opportunities to improve how people travel through the area, we plan to build a shared walking and cycling path on the western side of Chapel Road.

This will make it easier and safer for everyone, especially children, to walk to school, Barry Curtis Park, and the Ormiston Road bus stops.

We expect to deliver this project by July 2027.

If you think we’ve missed something or there is something in the area, we should be aware of, please get in touch with us by 1 May 2026 through atengagement@at.govt.nz or 09 355 3553.

This project will be delivered using funds from the Walking Programme.

The realignment of Chapel Road may be considered in the future under the Regional Land Transport Plan 2023-2034, subject to funding.

Timeline

Early investigation

Completed
June 2024 to December 2025

In June 2024, Auckland Transport, the Howick Local Board and a resident met on site to discuss the missing footpath connection on Chapel Road, between St Lukes Church and Ormiston Road.

Following our site visit, we considered the limitations of the road, construction challenges, as well as opportunities to improve how people travel through the area.

We decided on a 3m shared walking and cycling path, instead of a standard narrower footpath to future proof for any additional cycleway connections in the area.

Please note that at this stage, we will not be upgrading the existing gravel path between St Luke’s Church and Stancombe Road.

We have been made aware that a private development that would include footpath upgrades between St Luke’s Church and Stancombe Road is in progress.

Mana Whenua engagement

Completed
February to April 2026

We first engaged Mana Whenua on 26 Feb 2026 to discuss the shared path, its benefits, and our plan to mitigate possible impacts on the environment.

We are continuing engagement with Mana Whenua throughout the entire project.

Community engagement

In progress
April 2026

We want to share our plan to build a shared path on Chapel Road with the Flatbush community and get in touch with those who may be impacted by this change.

If you think we’ve missed something or there is something in the area, we should be aware of, please get in touch with us by 1 May 2026 through atengagement@at.govt.nz or 09 355 3553.

Detailed design

Upcoming
Early to mid-2026

We will finalise the design specifications, scheduling, and materials necessary to complete the project.

Construction

Upcoming
July 2026 to July 2027

Once funding is confirmed we will let you know the construction start date.

We expect to build the shared path by July 2027.

Project benefits

Safer journeys

The shared path will make it safer for everyone walking or biking by keeping them separate from cars along a sloped section of Chapel Road.

Better connections to infrastructure

The path on the western side of the road will connect to existing footpaths and gravel paths as well as future planned cycleways.

Easier access to public transport

The shared path will make it easier for people to walk and catch the bus on Ormiston Road.

Sustainable and healthier travel options

People can feel more comfortable walking or cycling along Chapel Road, which are more eco, wallet, and wellbeing friendly way to move around the neighbourhood.
