Overview

This project is about making rural intersections in the Hibiscus and Bays area safer and easier to use.

Around 9,000 vehicles a day use East Coast Road. There are a further 5,660 vehicles a day in local traffic on Spur Road, Wilks Road and Jackson Way. Spur Road is the access road to the Stillwater community.

This location has been chosen as there is a higher-than-normal crash history here. In the past 5 years, the Spur Road intersection has had 4 reported crashes, while the Wilks Road and Jackson Way intersection has had 6, including 1 fatal and 1 serious-injury crash.

We plan to install intersection speed zones with variable speed limit signs to make turning here safer and easier. These zones improve safety by letting drivers on East Coast Road know they need to slow down because there is a vehicle waiting to turn in or out of a side road.

Intersection speed zones can be installed faster and at a much lower cost than major changes like traffic lights or roundabouts. They deliver strong safety benefits with minimal construction disruption. This allows safety improvements to be rolled out at more locations across the network.
