Walking and drivingOverview
To improve safety and accessibility, we’re proposing to:
- rebuild the Fitzroy Street and Tavistock Street intersection, including new kerb buildouts, footpaths, and tactile pavers
- install new signs, road markings and streetlights to support the new crossings
- install broken yellow lines (no parking) and wooden bollards next to 17 and 18 Tavistock Street at the cul-de-sac
- install broken yellow lines (no parking) and wooden bollards next to 2 and 3 Tavistock Street at the cul-de-sac
- introduce parking restrictions near the crossings to improve visibility and sightlines
- remove nine on-street parking spaces to create space for these safety improvements.

Project background
These streets are well used by school children and families walking through the reserve walkway to reach Puhinui Road, local schools and childcare centres. A signalised pedestrian crossing near the walkway helps people cross busy Puhinui Road safely.
On Fitzroy Street, parents often stop and park near the intersection and the cul-de-sac of Tavistock Street during school pick-up and drop-off times. This causes congestion and raises safety concerns for pedestrians and nearby residents.
Additionally, Fitzroy Street is a wide road which can encourage speeding. There are also no formal pedestrian crossing points at the intersection, making it more difficult and less safe for people to cross.
