DrivingOverview
This project is about making rural intersections in the Franklin area safer and easier to use. These locations have been chosen as they have higher than normal crash histories.
About 4,650 vehicles use Great South Road every day. About 370 use Pitt Road every day.
About 4,020 vehicles use Papakura-Clevedon Road every day, while 1,240 use Tourist Road and 810 use Creightons Road.
We plan to install intersection speed zones with variable speed limit signs to make turning at these intersections safer and easier. These zones improve safety by alerting drivers on Great South Road or Papakura-Clevedon Road they need to slow down because there is a vehicle waiting to turn into or out of a side road.
Intersection speed zones can be installed faster and at a much lower cost than major changes like traffic lights or roundabouts. They deliver strong safety benefits with minimal construction disruption. This allows safety improvements to be rolled out at more locations across the network.
