The RideGI programme

In Glen Innes, we’re supporting local people through our RideGI cycling programme.

RideGI helps people of all ages and abilities:

  • feel confident riding bikes
  • connect to local places and spaces
  • make better use of new and existing cycleways.

Through RideGI, Auckland Transport works alongside schools, whānau and community partners. We deliver fun, whānau-friendly learn to ride and confidence-building activities, group rides and local events. We provide programmes that help remove cost barriers to cycling, and practical support to help local people get riding.

Bike hubs

The Glen Innes bike hub is at Maybury Reserve on Taniwha Street.

It’s a friendly community space where you can get:

  • discounted bikes
  • help with basic repairs
  • friendly support to start riding.

ParkRide Glen Innes is designed to help people stay active over winter. Ride at your own pace with friends and whānau, or meet new people along the way. You can choose your route. Distances range from 2km for children through to 9km for those wanting a longer ride. All ages and abilities are welcome.

What to expect

A relaxed, social ride where you can go at your own pace. There will be whānau-friendly activities, along with prizes and giveaways at each event.

Family Learn to Ride

Event details

Would your family like to learn how to ride bikes? The ‘Family Learn to Ride – Beginner’ course is great for adults and kids who have never ridden a bike before. It is also great for those who haven’t been on a bike in a while and feel a bit wobbly.

Bring your children along to Point England Primary and learn to ride while your children learn at the same time. If your child is under 6 years old we ask that a parent or guardian stays with them while the other parent learns to ride.

You’ll learn how to:

  • check your bikes and helmets are safe to use
  • balance on a bike and pedal by yourself
  • basic bike handling skills (braking, manoeuvring, gears and signaling).

Ride It Keep It – Glen Innes

Event details

This free programme is for locals who would benefit from having a bike but cannot afford one. It is run by Got to Get Out (opens in a new tab), with funding from Auckland Transport.

The Ride It Keep It kaupapa (mission) gives unwanted bikes a second life. It keeps them out of landfill, restoring them and getting them back into the hands of people who need them.

If you come to a free, 3-hour session, you will get:

  • a refurbished bike
  • safety and maintenance tips
  • a short, guided ride
  • a new helmet, lock and pump — all to keep.

The programme runs from May to June and is open to people who live in Glen Innes, Point England and Panmure.

You can join if you are a:

  • senior citizen
  • Community Services cardholder
  • student Year 5 or above.

If you’re under 14 years old, you need to bring an adult with you. You need to already know how to ride a bike.
