Understanding the area's needs

The Inner West area includes some of the busiest and most active places along the Western Line, such as Kingsland, Morningside and Mt Albert. These areas have a mix of jobs, shops, hospitality and major event destinations.

New development is already happening in anticipation of the City Rail Link (CRL), including the new Maungawhau Station. Along this part of the rail line, you can also see new apartments and business spaces.

This area has the highest train use, as its closest to the city centre and connects people to key destinations and events.

After the CRL opens, the Inner West will be first to benefit from more frequent services. Train frequency is expected to increase from around 12 trains per hour today to up to 24 trains per hour in each direction by 2035.

Six Inner West level crossings sit within the Inner West area:

  • George Street
  • Morningside Drive
  • Asquith Avenue
  • Rossgrove Terrace
  • Baldwin Ave (pedestrian)
  • Woodward Road.

People use these level crossings for a mix of school trips, moving between stations and destinations (including for work), visiting town centre shops and businesses, and travelling around their neighbourhoods.

Many of these journeys are made by people walking and cycling. Around Morningside, large numbers of people move along and around the line for major events at Eden Park and the surrounding hospitality area.
