Auckland’s rail network is being rebuilt one stage at a time. 

In Stage 1, 6 stations on the Southern and Onehunga Lines will be closed between 16 January 2023 and 19 March 2023.

When the rail network rebuild is complete and the City Rail Link opens, Auckland will have the modern and reliable rail network it deserves, bringing you more frequent services and faster journeys on all-electric trains.

To achieve this, KiwiRail needs to rebuild the 150-year-old foundations our trains currently run on. This vital upgrade will be done one section at a time over the next 3 years, so the rest of the train network can stay open during works.

This page outlines what is changing, and how we are supporting you with alternative transport choices while KiwiRail complete this work.


Project Stages

Regular holiday maintenance

26 December 2022 to 15 January 2023

The whole network will be closed during this period. KiwiRail will be putting in the mahi to get the network ready for the coming year and we’ll be providing rail replacement buses to keep you moving.

Buses will replace trains on all lines while essential maintenance and project work is completed across the rail network.

The Ōrākei Park and Ride will also be closed from 17 December 2022 to facilitate the work.

Rail Network Rebuild Stage 1

16 January to late March 2023

Six stations on the Southern and Onehunga Lines will be closed during this upgrade. We’re providing alternatives such as rail replacement buses and express bus services. Four train stations will be closed between Remuera and Penrose, plus Te Papapa and Onehunga stations.

Buses will replace trains at these stations:

  • Remuera
  • Greenlane
  • Ellerslie
  • Penrose
  • Te Papapa
  • Onehunga

Southern line trains will continue to run between Papakura and Britomart using the Eastern line (via Panmure). If you are travelling from any station between Ōrākei and Ōtāhuhu, you'll be able to use both the Eastern and Southern lines. 

Eastern line customers from Manukau will need to transfer at Ōtāhuhu to the Southern line in off-peak times only (9:15am to 3pm and 8pm to 5:15am).

Eastern and Western lines remain open during this time.

In addition to these closures, there may still be planned closures on other train lines across the network to facilitate routine maintenance and project work.

Stage 2

Late March 2023 to December 2023

The Eastern line will be closed between Britomart and Ōtāhuhu. Buses will replace trains at these stations:

  • Ōrākei
  • Meadowbank
  • Glen Innes
  • Panmure
  • Sylvia Park

Stations from Ōtāhuhu to Manukau will remain open and will be able to connect directly to Britomart via the Southern Line.

The remaining stages will be completed one section at a time over the next 3 years, so the rest of the train network can stay open during works. We’ll keep you informed with the details of additional stages as they are confirmed.


Getting around when lines are closed

Most services will still be open after 15 January 2023. We're providing alternatives for every service that’s closed.

To support KiwiRail through this work, AT and Auckland One Rail are providing a range of alternative transport options. These include:

  • rail replacement buses that follow the train route
  • express rail replacement buses direct to major destinations, such as Britomart and Newmarket
  • re-routing the Southern Line so that customers travelling between Britomart and Stations between Ōtāhuhu and Papakura can continue to use the train
  • existing bus routes (you may find one of our existing bus routes better suits your journey).

Your fare will be based on the number of fare zones you travel through. You will not pay more if you need to take a bus (or a train and a bus) to complete your journey.

What you need to know

Buses will be busier than usual, especially at peak times. You may wish to travel outside of the peak where you can.

People with wheelchairs or mobility scooters that are too large to take on rail replacement buses will be able to book a free mobility taxi through our Contact Centre.

How to stay updated and plan your journeys

The best way to stay informed during these changes is to download the AT Mobile app and subscribe to alerts for your train lines. You’ll get notified when there are changes to your line and what your alternative transport choices are.

When the Rail Network Rebuild is complete and the City Rail Link opens, Auckland will have the modern and reliable rail network it deserves with more frequent services and faster journeys on all-electric trains.

Why we need to close the lines

The Rail Network Rebuild will prepare our rail network for the opening of City Rail Link (CRL). The 150-year-old foundations need an upgrade so they can provide more frequent services and faster journeys.

The Rail Network Rebuild is not surface-level work. KiwiRail will lift the rails and sleepers, replace the foundations, improve drainage, and put the rails and sleepers back down.

KiwiRail investigated a range of options to limit the impact on train users. This included limiting work to evenings, weekends, and the holiday maintenance period. However, under that schedule, the Rail Network Rebuild would take nearly 20 years to complete.
